Tank selector switch

Tank selector switch

Refueling a BMW Hydrogen 7 vehicle with liquefied hydrogen (LH2) is requested by the driver using the tank selector switch. The tank selector switch is not to be confused with the switch for selection of the operating mode (hydrogen mode or petrol mode).

The mode selection switch can be found on the multifunction steering wheel. The choice of operating mode (hydrogen mode or petrol mode) is made by the Clean Energy control unit (CESG) and can be made by the driver under certain circumstances. The choice of operating mode depends on the petrol fill level and the H2 fill mass in the hydrogen tank.

The tank selector switch, on the other hand, is on the left of the steering wheel. When all the requirements for refueling have been met, it opens the fuel tank flap.

The fuel filler neck is coupled manually. The refuelling of the hydrogen vehicle with liquefied hydrogen is automatic. Once the tank coupling has been attached, the service station closes a current loop (see functional description ”Starter interlock”).
