Language processing system (SVS)

The language processing system is used to operate the functions in the Control Display, with the exception of the heating and air-conditioning functions. To this end, up to 400 commands can be entered in the language processing system.

The language processing system is a trained system with a high level of recognition certainty. The user must speak naturally when entering commands. The manner of speech must not be too loud or too extreme.

The language processing system is special equipment. This special equipment is only fitted alongside the special equipment 'Telephone', as the microphone of the hands-free facility is only fitted with this special equipment. The languages cannot be coded; they are assigned to the control unit.

The language processing system can be used to operate the following systems:

The language processing system is not used to control functions that are relevant to safety.

Brief description of components

SVS Language Processing Module

The language processing module is fitted towards the rear left of the luggage compartment. The language processing module is connected to the power supply and the MOST. The language processing module is a control unit in the MOST framework and is used to activate the functions listed above.

MFL Multi-function Steering Wheel

The PTT button (Push-to-Talk button) is fitted on the multi-function steering wheel. Pressing the PTT button sends the request for function activation across the CAN bus to the Control Display. The Control Display switches on the language processing system and the telephone functions by means of information via the MOST bus. This activates a microphone and the information path for the ”Telephone” function. Pressing once again cancels the dialogue guidance.

CD Control Display with Controller

Control Display Apart from a few exceptions, the Control Display incorporates the controls and displays for the vehicle electronics. The Control Display coordinates the function requests from the system and assigns them to the relevant functions.

Controller: The Control Display is operated by means of the Controller located on the front centre armrest.

ASK Audio System Controller

The Audio System Controller is a control unit in the MOST network. The ASK is the system master. The ASK is responsible for managing all audio signals.

Telephone module (transmit-receive unit)

The telephone module (transmit-receive unit) is connected to the MOST network for integrating the telephone in the communications network. In the telephone module, analog signals of the microphone are digitised and forwarded via the MOST connection to the voice-processing system.

K-CAN SYSTEM data bus

The K-CAN SYSTEM data bus is the data connection between the instrument cluster and the control units in the chassis and suspension, drive and body sections. Information is exchanged with data telegrams.

MOST bus

The MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) bus links the audio, video and navigation systems. Information relating to function requests is transmitted to the relevant control units by means of MOST bus messages.

Main functions

Starting and quitting the dialogue

Start: The language processing system is started up by pressing the PTT button on the multi-function steering wheel. In the language processing module, the Control Display requests a change in status. In response, the Control Display requests two audio channels from the audio system controller: one audio channel from the microphone of the hands-free system to the SVS and one from the SVS to the front door loudspeakers on the left and right. The SVS reports the change in status to the Control Display. The recognition dialogue is started.

Quit: The dialogue can be closed at any tine by pressing the PTT button once again.

Interrupting and cancelling the dialogue

Interrupt: Via the audio system controller, the Control Display can interrupt a dialogue that is running, e.g. due to audio output with higher priority. The language processing system can stop the dialogue before both audio connections are switched to mute by the Control Display and the audio system controller. The Control Display informs the language processing system as soon as it is able to continue the recognition dialogue. In principle, the Control Display can immediately interrupt the language processing system in exceptional cases. Here, the Control Display sends the status request ”interrupt” to the language processing system. The language processing system can then produce no output via the audio channel.

Cancel: The dialogue can be aborted by issuing the ”cancel” command.

General functions

General functions are those functions assigned to all function groups and always recognised by the language processing system in every dialogue state. The following commands are permitted for all function groups:

Full mode

The Full mode provides support for inexperienced users. The display of detailed output commands and long forms of commands to be recognised makes operation easier. The Full mode helps users to make the desired entries. Example: ”I want to dial a number”.

After a number of successful operations, the system proposes changing into the Quick mode.

Quick mode

The Quick mode enables an experienced user to shorten the dialogue by applying abbreviated commands. Example: ”Dial number”.

If a rejection is repeated or the Help function is invoked, the language processing system jumps back to the Full mode.

Visual feedback

Visible feedback from activated functions is output by the language processing system in the form of texts in the display of the instrument cluster. The texts displayed are SVS status messages in the top text line of the display. There are 20 characters available for the text display. There are 18 characters available for display of user input in the bottom line of the display.

Device functions / functionality

The following device functions / functionality can be operated by voice input:

Telephone

Navigation

Radio

Audio

CD changer

Cassette drive

Television (TV)

Internet browser

Telematics services

On-board computer

Notebook (SVS-internal)

Service Information

If the voice output ”Function currently not available” is present, this usually indicates an excessive load on the bus. An excessive load on the bus can be caused by a defective control unit.
