Back-up camera

When manoeuvring with the vehicle, the back-up camera provides a possibility to show the perspective to the rear on the display. Depending on the current settings, a number of driver assistance graphics can be overlaid on the video image. In addition, an automatic speed-dependent camera pan can be activated. Depending on the setting in the I-Drive menu, the camera image is shown as full screen or in the main window (2/3 display).

The back-up camera provides support for manoeuvring and hitching trailers. For vehicles with an original BMW trailer coupling, the RFK has a zoom mode.

The back-up camera does not replace the direct appraisal of the traffic situation by the driver!

Brief description of components

The following components are described for the back-up camera:

Back-up camera

The back-up camera is fitted in the luggage compartment lid. The camera and control unit are fitted in one housing. The image distorted by the curvature of the lens is compensated for by the software in the control unit.

Button: parking aid

The ”parking aid” button is read in via the air conditioning system and the status is passed on to the back-up camera via the K-CAN.

Video module

Depending on the version, the image from the back-up camera is not transferred to the head unit, rather to the video module.

CD Control Display

The image of the back-up camera is shown on the display. Depending on the setting, it appears as full screen or only in the left-hand area of the CID.

System functions

The back-up camera contains the following system functions.

Power supply:

The back-up camera is supplied via terminal 30 g. The fuse is located in the rear distribution box.

Lens heating:

The lens of the back-up camera is heated. The heating is switched on and off by the back-up camera itself. A defective heating system would cause a fault code memory entry.

Assistance graphics:

Various assistance graphics can be applied to the image of the camera. The graphics can be enabled or disabled in the menu of the back-up camera.

• Maximum curve radii:
  These radii illustrate the maximum turning circle in the camera image.
  
• Driving lane:
  The driving lane depends on the steering-wheel angle. It illustrates the forecast driving lane of the vehicle. If the steering-wheel angle remains the same, the vehicle moves within the driving lane marked in red.
  
• Distance graphic:
  The distance graphic is a supplement to the Park Distance Control. When the back-up camera detects an obstacle, a distance graphic appears in the real image. The graphic changes colour depending on the gap to the obstacle. The colours run from red to green.
  
• Camera pan:
  The camera pan can be used to change the horizontal angle of view of the camera. This function helps when hitching a trailer.

• Distance graphic on/off
  
• Camera pan on/off

General information

The back-up camera switches the image output off when it is not active.

Diagnosis instructions

• Depending on the coding, the picture signal is transmitted in the vehicle via a CVBS or RGB signal.
  
• A soiled lens can lead to a poor representation. In extreme cases, the camera can no longer evaluate pictures. This means a soiled lens can lead to a system failure. To prevent an incorrect diagnosis, the optical elements of the camera must be cleaned.
  
• After replacement of the camera, it must be calibrated!
  

Operation

The back-up camera switches on with the following conditions:

• By pressing the ”parking-aid” button
  
• The back-up camera activates itself when reverse gear is engaged.
  

The back-up camera switches off with the following conditions:

• When 30 kph is exceeded
  
• After a distance driven of 300 [00] forwards
  
• By pressing the ”parking-aid” button
