Wing mirror camera system and video switch

The system with camera in the passenger wing mirror serves to comply with MLIT Announcement 619/2002 (Safety Regulations for Road Vehicles) in the X5. According to this legislation, the driver must have the possibility to partially see a test object with 0.3 m diameter and 1 m height that is moved along the front and passenger's side directly at the vehicle.

The camera in the door mirror shows the view downwards from the bottom of the mirror on the CID. The field of view of the camera covers at least the area between the front wheel and the centre of the vehicle. The image then shows at least 30 cm as of the outer side of the vehicle. This function is displayed with priority over all other displays that are possible when the vehicle is stationary (e.g. television, onboard computer, navigation).

The video switch is deployed between the head unit (CCC) and CID. The video switch switches between the video sources head unit and wing mirror camera. The display of the wing mirror camera can be activated using a button. With certain events, the camera display is switched off and the image is displayed again in the head unit. Displays of the head unit with higher priority are transferred to the CID despite the fact that the wing mirror camera is active. An example would be pressing the SOS button.

Brief description of components

The following components are described for the wing mirror camera:

Wing mirror camera:

The wing mirror camera is fitted in the wing mirror on the passenger side.

Button for the wing mirror camera:

The button for activating of the wing mirror camera is fitted in the SZM. The IHKA reads in the status of the button. The status is forwarded across the CAN bus to the video switch.

The following control units are involved in the function of the wing mirror camera:

VSW video switch

The video switch is the central component of the system. It supplies the camera with energy and transforms the CVBS signal of the camera into an LVDS signal. Depending on requirements, either the camera image or the image of the head unit is transferred to the CID.

Head unit (CCC)

The head unit always sends its image to the video switch. Here, it is irrelevant whether the image of the head unit is shown on the CID or not.

CID display

The CID receives the picture information from the video switch. Depending on the priority, the image from the wing mirror camera or the image of the head unit is transferred to the CID.

System functions

The following system functions are described for the wing mirror camera:

Power supply for the wing mirror camera

The power supply of the camera is implemented via the video switch. The required voltage is generated in the video switch

Power supply of the video switch

The power supply of the video switch is implemented via the front distribution box. The current is switched via terminal 30 g.
