The selector lever is used to choose the desired gearbox function and it has six mechanical positions.
The gear changes are triggered sequentially (one after the other). A gear or several gears can be skipped using rapid multiple touches.
In the gearshift gate, one press forwards (-) triggers a gear change (e.g. downshift from 5 to 4, 4 to 3, etc.). Pulling backwards (+) triggers a gear change (e.g. upshift from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 etc.).
In the direction of travel gate, moving the selector lever from neutral (N) in the direction of travel can shift to reverse (R).
Moving the selector lever towards C/M can change the operating modes from manual mode, M mode, to City mode, C mode, and vice versa.
Seven Hall sensors are fitted in the selector lever block to identify the position. This records the selector-lever position without contact.
A spring-loaded mechanism holds the selector lever in each position: middle position, O position and reverse travel.
The selector lever is supplied with power by the load cutoff terminal (VA).
The selector-lever position is transferred through four analog cables and a digital cable to the SMG control unit.
In the event of a fault, the gearbox is permanently in the automatic mode.
