VANOS system

The VANOS system tests for the S54 engine serve as a general function check of the adjustability of the intake and/or exhaust camshaft of the VANOS system.

The stepless double VANOS fitted in the S54 engine has the following electrical components:

• Exhaust camshaft sensor
  
• Intake camshaft sensor
  
• 4 solenoid valves
  

In the VANOS system test for the S54 engine, the following functions and characteristics are checked within the corresponding test module:

• • Advanced limit stops
    
  • Retarded limits stops
    
  • Valve test
    
  • Adjustment time measurement
    
  • Leak test
    

During the concluding leak test, the regulator is disabled when it reaches the target position and the situation is observed to see whether the oil pressure in the VANOS system is high enough to maintain the position without more activation.

In the event of a leak, check the engine for leaks.
