Active air flap control

Active air flap control

Introduction

The active air flap control serves to improve the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. A reduction in the CO2 emissions is achieved in this way. The design envelope required for the control system means that in most models it cannot be combined with the optional extras xDrive, sports package, AFS or ACC. The control system for the lower air flaps must be eliminated in vehicles with turbocharging.

System functions

The air flow through the radiator creates high aerodynamic drag as the driving speed increases. For this reason, the closed air flaps inhibit the air flow through the radiator during normal driving. The engine management continuously calculates the required cooling output and only opens the flaps when an increased cooling air volume is really required.

Another advantage of the air flap control is the shorter engine warm-up phase, as the better encapsulated environment means the operating temperature is reached sooner.

Notes for Service department

Important: Work may only be carried out on the air flaps (in particular checking the flaps for stiff movement) with the engine switched off. There is a risk of injury.
