Repair instruction 'door opens of its own accord in the first lock position'

Door opens of its own accord in the first lock position

Complaint

While the vehicle is being driven, the door opens of its own accord but is held in the first lock position.

Cause

The sealing system of the door interacts with the elasticities and frictional forces to form a complex spring/mass system.
If the doors are closed with a critical speed, a so-called 'bogus closing' can occur.
The safety rotary striker lock system that is used by BMW and is standard in the automobile industry therefore has a catch facility. In the event of (unavoidable) 'bogus closing', this prevents the door from opening completely.
This catch facility (also referred to as a pre-lock stage) is also legally prescribed.
Vehicles and door locks that have been examined to date show no defects on the components concerned.

Repair instruction

No constructive measures can be implemented to exclude 'bogus closing' 100 %.
In the case of vehicles with Soft Close Automatic system (SCA), a 'bogus closing' can be prevented when the door is closed using the SCA.
In the event of a complaint, check the correct setting of the door.
