Seat occupancy detection

The seat occupation detection consists of a mat on which pressure-sensitive sensors are fitted. In addition, the mat has a hardwire connection to an electronic evaluation unit. The weight classification is based on evaluating the impression created by the person when taking their seat. The seat occupation detection cannot measure weights. Due to the activation of individual cells of the sensor mat, a weight class is determined by the electronic evaluation unit. The electronic evaluation unit sends cyclical information on the classification to the right B-pillar satellite control module (E60) or front passenger's seat satellite (E65).

Data exchange between the seat occupation detection and the right B-pillar satellite or passenger's seat satellite (E65) is across a hardware cable. The seat occupation detection monitors the inputs and outputs. Possible fault states are stored in the fault memory of the right B-pillar satellite or passenger's seat satellite (E65).

If there is a defect in the seat occupation detection, the seat mat including foam part must be replaced. After replacement of the seat mat, the fault memory of the right B-pillar satellite or passenger's seat satellite (E65) contains the following entry: ”Seat occupation mat, passenger: not released”. After replacement of the seat occupation mat, the seat mat must be released. The test program for release is located at:

Notes on safety

All work on the airbags must be carried out with the battery disconnected!

Connect and disconnect all BYTEFLIGHT control modules, sensors and generators only with the battery disconnected!

If a fiber-optic cable on the BYTEFLIGHT bus has to be repaired, it must be borne in mind that there may only be one join in a fiber-optic cable. If there is already a join due to a door connector, the fiber-optic cable must not be repaired. In the case of a defect, the fiber-optic cable must be replaced!
